WHAT IS TRANSPERSONAL PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Transpersonal psychotherapy a psychotherapeutic approach that combines psychological understanding  with spiritual wellbeing and exploration. I approach hypnotherapy, art and the Enneagram from the Transpersonal perspective.

One of the most important components of my work with people is my capacity to accept with love and compassion the people with whom I work; to hold space and open my heart without judgment.

In my practice I integrate a variety of healing modalities including psychodynamic/ transpersonal psychotherapy, art therapy, transpersonal hypnotherapy and the Enneagram.I have over 30 years experience offering psychotherapy to adults, adolescents, children, couples, and families.

MODALITIES

I was originally trained in a psychodynamic, insight oriented approach. I added to this the use of humanistic, mindfulness, and cognitive behavioral processes.

I naturally combined art and psychotherapy in the 90’s when I became an Art Therapist. I use art therapy as way to help people express themselves when verbalization is difficult, or as a way to uncover something that seems to be lurking beneath the surface. Art Can be a powerful way to explore the shadow aspects of our process. My work with the Enneagram provides a way to uncover patterns of behavior very quickly. It also provides an approach to discover our free, liberated or essential nature. Many of my clients attend my workshops on the Enneagram. While these workshops can speed up the therapeutic process enormously, they are not required or necessary.

COMMON ISSUES

I help my clients discover the patterns of belief, emotions, and behavior, that have felt limiting and have  affected their lives. I see the wholeness of each person, rather than deficiency or illness; providing an environment for people to come to a natural place of healing. My work is eclectic, psychodynamic, humanistic, behavioral, mindful, whatever works. I work with adults of all ages and adolescents; providing individual, couples and family therapy. My work is Transpersonal because the range can be from behaviors and patterns that can cause great suffering, to the exploration of total freedom.

COMMON THEMES

Sexual Abuse

I have been working in this area for over 30 years. I have worked with all aspects of abuse, including family dynamics, the effect  on relationships, as well as personal dynamics. The effect of sexual abuse is board and influences all areas of our lives.

Some questions that come up for adults who were sexually abuse as children are; do I want children, will I abuse my children, how can I trust my partner, will I ever enjoy sex, how do I tell my partner, etc? Often when working with people who were sexually abused I use Art Therapy, and group process,  individual psychotherapy, as well as couples and family therapy.

Eating Disorders

I started working with eating disorders early in my practice. I began to see a connection between sexual abuse and eating disorders. Although all kinds of abuse, as well as controlling family environments can lead to eating disorders, it is often a way to feel in control, and a way of self-comforting. Some types of Eating Disorders are a way of expressing repressed sexual energy.

In working with people who have eating disorders I have used art therapy, group process, and individual psychotherapy, as well as couples and family counseling.

Substance Abuse

I first started working with substance abuse when I was a Program Director for Mental Health Services in Levy County, Florida. I began to focus more deeply in this area when people who had completed a unique treatment with a substance called Ibogaine,  started to come to me for aftercare psychotherapy.

Ibogaine treatment uses a plant found in Africa, which has the effect of interrupting many forms of substance addiction. The treatment is done in various parts of the world, as it is not legal in the United States at this time. I’ve  been doing post Ibogaine aftercare since 1992. My treatment approach is transpersonal which includes in-depth psychology as well as spiritual development.  I view the process of awakening out of the dream of the false ego identity and realizing one’s true nature as an integral part of the recovery process.
